The impact resonant method is coded in ASTM C215-97 for measuring the dynamic modulus of elasticity Ed and the dynamic Poisson ratio νd of concrete specimen. This method is laborious and needs attentive care when testing, and is constrained to some specific sizes of specimens. The paper proposed a method using an ultrasonic-pulse device as the wave source for concrete and two accelerometers connected to a wave analyzer as the receivers. Reading the wave fronts in the time domain, the longitudinal wave and the Rayleigh wave velocities can be calculated. Via the relationships between stress wave velocities and material properties and the Rayleigh equation, the Ed and νd of concrete can be estimated. The measurement can also be performed on concrete structures. Four concrete specimens were cast to perform testing by the proposed method as well as by the impact resonant method for comparison. The test results showed that, the Ed values estimated by the proposed method were slightly smaller than those by the impact resonant method only within 10%, while the νd values were 10~38% larger than those by the impact resonant method.
