Products consist of wood fiber such as furniture, book and wall paper are susceptible to fungal attack, resulting in the deterioration of such products. Therefore, developing an environmental-friendly anti-mold agent becomes an important issue. The purposes of this study are to evaluate the inhibitory properties of essential oils extracted from Litsea cubeba (Lour.) Pers and their major compounds against molds, Aspergillus niger, Penicillium citrinum and Trichoderma viride. Chemical analysis for essential oils was carried out by GC/MS, and study on morphological change on fungal hyphae was observed by Scanning Electron Microscope. At the concentrations of 200 and 300μg/ml, fruit oil revealed the strongest antifungal activity against the molds tested, following by twig and leave oils. As the results of chemical analysis, citral (geraniol and neral), and lemonene were the major compounds in fruit oil. Geraniol, the major compound of fruit and twig oils, performed the best antifungal activity with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 88, 256 and 275 μg/ml against P. citrinum, T. viride and A. niger, respectively. Structural alteration of fungal hyphae treated with geraniol was found by using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), indicating that cell wall permeability might be dramatically changed and resulted in the dysfunction of fungal cells.
