Three outbreaks of botulism in black-faced spoonbills, at the eastern and the
northern fish ponds, Chiku Hsiang, Tainan Hsien, Taiwan occurred on December 9,
2002, December 21, 2002, and January 3, 2003, respectively. Seventy one birds died in these outbreaks. The sick birds showed clinical sings of respiratory distress, open-mouth breathing, neck paralysis (limberneck), wing paralysis, comatose, and death. No remarkable pathological changes were grossly and opathologically observed.
Clostridium botulinum was isolated from gastric contents. Gastric supernatants and sera obtained from freshly dead birds and Clostridium botulinum type C antisera were intraperitoneally inoculated into mice. All mice were survived from the trials. However,all other mice died from intraperitoneal inoculation of gastric supematants without Clostridium botulinum type C antisera or with Clostridium botulinum type A, B, D, E Based on the animal trials, Clostridium botulinum isolations from dead black-faced spoonbills, dead great egret and from the sedimentary soil of the northern fish pond and PCR assay for Clostridium botulinum type C1 toxin gene, botulism caused by Clostridium botulinum type C1 was diagnosed in these outbreaks.
