Hsia (1990) pointed out although the total number of livestock raised in the tropical and subtropical countries was quite high, their production efficiency was lower than the rest of the world. This might be due to many factors, e.g. low genetic potential of animals, climate environment and social environment. If we excluded the factor of genetic potential of animals, then the most important single factor which influence on production efficiency is high environmental temperature. The summer high environmental temperature caused cattle have 25% lower milk production when compared with the winter season (Hsia, 1990). Some studies suggested that growth hormone might be the most important single factor which can improve the milk production. However literature review indicated that initial research results from Cornell University on bovine growth hormone treated cow had an increase in production from 30-40 percent. As the hormone has been used under more commercial conditions, the increase has been from 10-20 percent (Keown, 1989). If we can release heat stress then we can improve milk production about 25%. Heat stress also causes a lot of reproduction disorder problems. Big drop down of milk production from entire farm can be caused by these problems. It is also necessary to be very careful to concern about environment when adopt a method to release heat stress. All these concerns about environment are related to weather. Any limited factors can reduce heat loss from cattle. The purpose of the paper is to understand the effect of heat stress on dairy cattle and how to release it.
