In recent years, orchids produced in Taiwan have become important floricultural crops. Among them, phalaenopsis, oncidium, oriental cymbidium, and paphiopedilum are the most important for commercial production both as potted plants as well as cut flowers. Their production has been largely geared towards the international market and to a lesser extent the local market. New orchid hybrids are selected from a population of cross hybridization progeny and mass propagated by either axillary meristem culture or by flower stalk nodal culture. Many elite hybrid clones of Phalaenopsis and its relative genera have been produced through micropropagation via shoot multiplication or protocorm-like bodies. Epigenetic mutations may occur during the process of tissue culture. An understanding of the molecular basis of these somaclonal variations may help develop an early molecular diagnostic test to reduce the chance of mutations. A functional genomic study of the molecular control of orchid growth and development also depends on the mutants induced by chemicals such as EMS (ethylmethane sulfonate). T-DNA tagging after transformation of orchid tissues may help isolate target genes affecting morphological or physiological processes. Upon development of an efficient transformation of orchids either through Agrobacterium or particle bombardment, important genes of interest can be introduced into orchid genome to produce novel characters such as floral fragrance, disease resistance, flower colors, flowering, and nutrition use efficiency.
