The purpose of this experiment was to study whether previous temperature regime experienced by broilers influenced their subsequent growth performance. Four-day old chickens (n=400) with an average initial body weight of 54.4 g were used in the experiment and randomly distributed to the following treatment: Treatment 1: Low temperature (1-4 weeks) followed by high temperature (5-8 weeks) (LH). Treatment 2: Low temperature (1-4 weeks) followed by low temperature (5-8 weeks) (LL). Treatment 3: High temperature (1-4 weeks), followed by low temperature (5-8 weeks) (HL). Treatment 4: High temperature (1-4 weeks), followed by high temperature (5-8 weeks) (HH). The low temperature treatment in weeks 1-4 consisted of 26℃ during the 1st week of age followed by subsequent weeks during which the temperature was lowered by 1℃ per week with a temperature of 23℃ by week 4. The high temperature during weeks 1-4 consisted of 33℃ temperature for the 1st week followed by a 1℃ decrease in subsequent weeks to reach 30℃ during the 4th week of age. During 5-8 weeks, the low temperature was 23℃ and the high 30℃. The most interesting results were that the broilers raised in LL treatment displayed the best growth performance, which was even higher than found in broilers raised in the HL treatment. On the other hand, the broilers raised under the HH regime had the poorest performance. Previous experience suggested that broilers raised under the HL treatment should have performed the best. We also expected that the birds raised under the LH regime would have the poorest performance but this was not the case. It is not easy to explain these results. We can only suggest that prior environmental temperature experience can influence the subsequent performance of broilers.
