The purpose of this experiment was to study whether this kind of cooling house can benefit boars. A total of 18 boars comprised of 3 breeds (Landrace, Yorkshire and Duroc) were used in the experiment. The boars were randomly distributed to the following two house treatments. Treatment 1. Boars were raised in a wet pad and forced ventilated house. Treatment 2. Boars were maintained in a conventional open design house. The two houses had identical designs in every other respect. The size of pens was 3m×4m. A period of a week was allowed for adaptation of animals to their housing. Semen was collected from boars once every 5 days at 6:00 am. The test lasted about 7 weeks. The following items were recorded: total play time with a dummy sow, total semen collection time, ejaculation frequency during collection, total semen volume, ear temperature, back body temperature, scrotal skin temperature, rectal temperature, motility of sperm and total number of sperm. The results showed that the sperm of boars in treatment 1 had significant better motility than boars kept in treatment 2. Differences in other parameters between treatments did not reach significance. The following factors were suppressed in boars raised in a wet pad and forced ventilation cooling house: ear temperature, back body temperature, scrotal skin temperature and rectal temperature. Yet other parameters were higher on average for the boars raised in the cooling house: total sperm, total play time with a dummy sow, and total semen collection time. The results also showed that Duroc had a lower total volume of semen, ear temperature, back body temperature, scrotal skin temperature, total play time with a dummy sow and total semen collection time than the other breeds. The results indicated that the maintenance of boars in a wet pad and forced ventilation cooling house may improve their semen quality.
