The adoption of feng shui, an ancient Chinese philosophy, in an exemplary western family garden design is discussed in this paper. The concepts of feng shui are portrayed by harmonious living space represented by balanced vital energy chi. Chi's influence over people's lives is created around the house where they live. In the remake of an experimental garden located in Slovakia an attempt was made to support a balanced relationship between humans and their environment by using common feng shui principles and techniques. Form school feng shui considered the topography. The method of five elements (water, fire, earth, metal and wood) was also respected in the proposed design. Pa kua and 1o shu square were additional methods used in this project. Yin and yang principle is connected with all other methods and rules applied. The whole design was inspired by traditional Chinese gardens.
Basic elements and principles of western landscape design were considered during
developing of the project as well. Harmony in the exemplary garden was achieved by
evaluating the present state of the garden according to feng shui and employing
aforementioned techniques with appropriate tools (colours, forms, symbols, plant sortiment...).
This study concludes that the idea of feng shui in terms of harmoniously balanced living space is close to the ideas of western nations. Feng shui is a philosophy that can be adopted to any garden space in correspondence with local traditions, customs and needs of particular culture and environment.
