The purpose of present study was assessment of antihypertensive effect on spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) from Taiwan Pinus morriisonicola Hay. needles. Three different treatments, cold-air drying, hot-air drying and lyophilized, on pine needles were conducted in current experiment. The results demonstrated that intake of 1.5 mg/ml needle extract over a period of 12 weeks improved reduction of 20 mmHg on systolic blood pressure, mean blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure. When the SHR orally administered with single dose of needles extract, the 8.6 % decrease of blood pressure was observed and last for at least 8 hours with independent dose of needle extract. The concentrations of sodium and chlorine in blood serum from SHR and WKY (Wistar Kyoto) ascended significantly in the study of final stage. However, the concentration of potassium in blood serum from SHR was higher than that of negative-control. The result inferred that needles extract accelerated the launch of potassium channel, and resulted in relaxing of blood vessels. Moreover, needles extract may reduce the fat accumulation in the organs and vessels between SHR and WKY. Besides, the occurrence of vascular sclerosis was moderated by introducing 1.5 mg/ml of needles extract over a period of 12 weeks. The evidence implied that Taiwan Pinus Morrisonicola Hay. needles may diminished the vascular sclerosis by promoting the endothelial function of SHR. Conclusively, the pine needle extract indicates a great potential as an alternative for hypertension.
