For ruminant animals which fed mainly on roughage, rumen pH is a key factor determining roughage utilization. Bacteria which breakdown fiber will not grow in acidic environment, hence, when pH value is lower than 6.0, fiber digestion will be reduced (Russell and Dombrowski, 1980). Long term low pH value will induce metabolic diseases such as acidosis etc., creating losses in dairy production. Therefore, feeding management such as total mixed ration (TMR) and increasing feeding frequency are conducted to impair starch fermentation rate in the rumen to achieve stable rumen acidity, lowering the adverse effect of acidity on rumen microorganism. In the recent studies on rumen acidity, many emphasis being put on the functions of grain feed (French and Kennelly, 1990; Dhiman et al., 2002), effectiveness of complementing roughage fiber and starch (Beauchemin, 2002) or preventing metabolic diseases (Nocek, 1997) etc. Most of the studies stated were developed on higher ratio of concentration and roughage basal diet, whereas research on higher ratio of roughage inclusion in the diet was relatively lesser. However, to increase the utilization of local roughage, complete data on roughage in dietary composition is necessary to develop the utilization of roughage meeting local requirements. Hence, the present study emphasize on 60% roughage inclusion as high roughage diet, complementing with different feeding management, determining the effects on feed intake, rumen, and milk production status.
