In this study, the authors investigate the applicability of TiO2/NiO composite particles on a FTO-glass substrate of a working electrode in a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). Dry particle coating was performed to coat the nano-sized NiO powder on the surface of TiO2 particles. A layer of TiO2/NiO composite particles (or TiO2 particles) was deposited on the FTO-glass substrate of the working electrode and then sintered in a high-temperature furnace. The working electrode with a TiO2/NiO (or TiO2) thin film was immersed in the solution of N-719 (Ruthenium) dye for 24 h. Finally, the DSSC was assembled, and the short-circuit photocurrent, the open-circuit photovoltage and the power conversion efficiency of DSSC were measured using a I-V measurement system. This study also examined the effects of the mass ratio of TiO2 to Ni, the area of the cell, and the treatment of TiCl4 on the power conversion efficiency of the DSSC. Most importantly, this study shows that the power conversion efficiency of the DSSC (3.80%) with TiO2/NiO composite particles on a FTO-glass substrate (with TiCl4 treatment, 0.25 cm2) substantially exceeds that of the conventional DSSC (1.87%) with a working electrode (without TiCl4 treatment, 1.00 cm2).
