Sewer operation and maintenance may result in severe injuries and death during the entry of workers into confined space such as the sewer main and manholes. Vapors and gases are among the most dangerous elements that present in the sewers. They can be both toxic and explosive. Present study numerically investigates the effectiveness of using either a blower or an exhaust fan to remove toxic gases from the sewer system. The configuration and dimensions of the sewer system are based on an actual system in UK. The length of the sewerpipe is 283.62 ft and its diameter is 108 in. The depth and diameter of the manholes are 267.74 in (about 6.78 m) and 36 in, respectively. The grid system of the sewerpipes was generated using GAMBIT 2.3.16 while the computational simulation was performed using FLUENT 6.2.16. There are two types of 10-in ventilation pipes of different lengths considered in this work, one being 2 m while the other one is 6 m. The flow rates of air through the ventilation pipes are 0.5 m3/s, 1.0 m3/s, and 1.5 m3/s. This simulation shows that the concentration of the toxic gases can be significantly reduced with the introduction of either a fresh air blower or a toxic gas exhaust fan. Also based on the computational results, it is apparent that the length of the ventilation pipe plays a much more critical role than the flow rate of air in it. In general, the sewerpipe is safer for operation and maintenance if the flow rate is greater and the ventilation pipe is long enough to reach beyond the manhole.
