Aims: The aims of this study are two-fold: to determine the purpose of the fitness monitoring within secondary school curricula in England and to explore the factors affecting teachers' views of and approaches to such monitoring; and to propose recommendations for monitoring fitness within secondary school PE curricula in England. Methods: The research design involved the integration of qualitative methods including a national interviewing a sample of secondary school head of PE department. Results: 15 teachers were interviewed. The interview data revealed issues associated with fitness monitoring within the school curriculum, including: their purpose and value; pupils' responses to the fitness testing; and resource limitations. Recommendations: Six recommend were proposed including: 1. PE teachers should be helped to realise that the processes of monitoring fitness should include development and assessment of pupils' knowledge and understanding, competence and motor skills, behavioural skills and attitudes and confidence. 2.Teachers should be offered initial teacher education and continuing professional development relating to monitoring pupils' fitness monitoring within the pecurriculum. 3. PE teachers should be encouraged to emply appropriate monitoring methods with pupils and be helped to realize that accurate instruments, precise recording, and elaborate data analysis are not essential in an educational setting. 4. An adequate amount of time should be allocated to teaching children about the health benefits of physical activity and promoting physical activity through monitoring processes. 5. When monitoring fitness, teachers should be made aware that it is unnecessary to make comparisons between students or against standardized norms, and that it is important to avoid discomfort or embarrassment associated with class ranking or peer comparison. 6. Teachers should be encouraged to adopt different teaching approaches and modles which involve children in self-monitoring and target setting to develop their independence and self-management skills.
