In order to depict the population dynamics of dengue vector in detail, a total of 5180 mosquito surveillance spots were set up to collect weekly mosquito data, including number of mosquito eggs and larvae of Aedes aepypti and Aedes albopictus, in the Kaohsiung City and seven major townships with intensive Aedes aepypti activities in the Kaohsiung County from the 7th June, 2009 to 13th June, 2010. We used Google Map as the platform to establish a GIS-based Mosquito Surveillance Mapping System for providing health authorities with continuous monitoring of mosquito population dynamics spatiotemporally. Areas with high abundance of mosquitoes in specific periods can be identified as spatial target areas for dengue prevention and control. In addition, spatial-temporal diffusion patterns of dengue cases were also analyzed to capture transmission dynamics of the dengue epidemic in 2009. Analyzing the dynamics of dengue cases and mosquitoes simultaneously can delineate more clear patterns of human-mosquito interactions in time and space and provide more geospatial insights into epidemiological characteristics of dengue transmission.
