Spur dikes are important elements in river training. The main reason for their usage are
mitigating bank/embankment erosion, deepen navigation channels and enhancing
morphological diversity. Therefore, the goal for this study was to evaluate their
efficiency based on two obtainable river morphological characteristics – distance/length
(D/L) and distance/height (D/H) ratios. A case study of LinYuan embankment in
Kaoping River, Southern Taiwan is presented. In the study, the local bed morphology is
investigated from aerial photographs and HEC-RAS model. Grain size characteristics
and soil classification are probed using the American Association of State Highway and
Transportation Officials (AASHTO). Soil classification results show that the soil was
mainly silt and the general AASHTO subgrade rating was fair to poor. This fair to poor
rating suggests that particular attention must be paid to the soil type around spur dikes
in order to prevent their damage. Finally, we conclude that shortening the distance
between spur dikes to less than 100m and length to less than 45m is ideal for preventing
scouring.
