In this paper, a human-machine-interface (HMI) based nutrient solution monitoring and control system is developed and utilizes to hydroponics cultivation for plant. The system includes personal computer, microcontrollers, flow-meter modules, water quality monitor modules, peripheral circuit, power modules, pipe, nutrient solution storage tank, and liquid-regulating valve. The four types of water quality parameters (including pH, electrical conductivity (EC), DO, and water temperature) are measured, respectively, by a microcontroller, which drives flow control valves in nutrient solution storage tank. The operator can select the desired plant name on the HMI or setup nutrient solution concentrations manually, which results in an automatic deployment of nutrient solution for plant growth. Meanwhile, the current nutrient solution concentrations within a cultivation bed are shown in HMI. The experiment is conducted in a cultivation bed with a lighting emitting diode (LED) lighting board. The experiment results illustrate that each of tolerable concentration range of nutrient solutions can be maintained by employing the proposed system.
