Cadmium (Cd) is one of the most bioavailable heavy metal in soils. Cadmium may
interfere with the uptake of essential elements.Thus, in this study, we investigated the changes
in iron (Fe) concentration in Cd-treated rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings. On treatment with 5
μM CdCl2, Cd concentration increased, whereas Fe concentration decreased in both shoots and
roots of rice seedlings. Moreover, Cd treatment resulted in an induction of OsIRT1 transcript in
roots of rice seedlings. Exogenous addition of excess Fe-citrate decreased Cd concentration and
Cd toxicity of rice seedlings. Evidence presented in this study suggests that the improvement of Fe status is able to reduce toxicity of rice seedlings to CdCl2.
