In this study, we made U-shaped optical fiber sensor in three types of fiber(O980/1000 μm plastic fiber, O600/630 μm and O400/430 μm glass fiber) and two grinding depth (one fifths and two fifths of core diameter) by fiber side-grinding system, we also improved the quality of the fiber sensors by fine mending the grinding rod and design the new fiber fixture. Then we used the fiber sensors to sense sucrose solution (index range from1.333 to 1.403 RIU) with sensing platform with high-power light emitting diode (λ=528nm), and analyze the sensing slope, standard deviation and sensor resolution of those fiber sensors. After the sensing test, we analyze fiber types and grinding depth effect of sensor resolution.
In this study, the side grinding system successfully made the U-shaped fiber sensor in two different grinding depths for three types of fiber, and the average depth error is less than 15 μm. We also find the effect in fiber types and grinding depth on the sensor resolution, the bigger fiber size and deeper grinding depth on U-shaped fiber will improve the sensing slope and sensor resolution.
The results showed the plastic fiber(O980/1000 μm) is easy to grind than glass fiber (O600/630 μm and O400/430 μm), and high yield rate and high sensing slope are also higher for the plastic one. The best average sensing slope and sensor resolution is happened on O980/1000 μm plastic fiber with two fifth of core grinding depth.
