In this study, A Fusion-stretching method is applied on all fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer
based on two concatenating taper of a single mode fiber is presented. The abrupt fiber taper is fabricated by a modified fiber fusion splicer with a adjustable stretching mechanism therefore the taper shape can be controlled. In order to investigate the effect of different sensing length and taper waist on sensing sensitivity of Mach-Zehnder interferometer fiber sensor, fiber sensors with five sensing length 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 mm and different taper waist is fabricated by normal fusion-stretching process and evaluated with sucrose solution. The results shows the relative high sensing sensitivity is achieved with sensing length 40 mm and taper waist 50 μm. Furthermore, the advance improvement of sensing sensitivity is also reached by comparing different taper structure and fusionstretching process. The results show that the best sensitivity -87 nm/RIU in the range of refractive index 1.373~1.403 is achieved by multi-pure-fusion without stretching with the sensing length 40mm, taper angle 45 degree, and taper waist 40 μm.
