The effect of tapered fiber with different fabricating process on the fiber loop mirror interferometer sensor employed polarization maintaining fiber is demonstrated. The taper structure is fabricated on a standard single-mode fiber by fusion splicer with stretching mechanism. The fabrication process is done in three different ways: single fusion-stretching (SFS), multiple fusions with single stretching (MFSS) and multiple fusions with single stretching (MFSS). The fiber loop mirror interferometer (FLMI) sensor consisted of a fiber coupler, a polarization maintaining fiber (PMF), and a taper structure treated as a sensing area. In order to obtain the effect of different taper types on the sensitivity of FLMI sensor, the tapers in FLMI sensor are achieved by SFS, MFSS and MF process with taper waist of 30, 40 and 50 μm for refractive index (RI) measurements in the range of 1.333~1.341 RIU and temperature measurements in the range of 20~70°C. The results show that the best sensing sensitivity of FLMI sensor is -77.1nm / RIU with taper fiber fabricated by MFSS process and taper waist of 40μm.
