Antrodia cinnamomea is a kind of precious fungi in Taiwan, which only grows on some particular type of camphor trees. Due to the excessive destruction by human beings, camphor trees have become the victim of deforestation and the number is significantly reduced. As a result, the production of Antrodia cinnamomea is also drastically decreased. Artificial cultivation of Antrodia cinnamomea, however, still remains in a very slow path and ineffective in terms of the yield of polysaccharides and triterponoids therein. Thus, a study of the Antrodia cinnamomea media can be considered a valuable alternative. In this study, Antrodia cinnamomea, owing to its characteristic of degrading lignocelluloses in methyl cellulose, was used to degrade the cellulose in bananas and then convert it into saccharides; thus, carbon content in the cultivating media was increased, the growth of Antrodia cinnamomea excited, polysaccharide synthesis improved. The experiments of the study were majorly divided into two parts. In the first part, the commonly used media MEA and media of various species of bananas were used to carry out plenary solid cultivation of Antrodia cinnamomea mycelia to insure the feasibility and compare the differences. In the second part, the amount of extracellular polysaccharides and cellulous activities were examined to identify the effects of different types of bananas on Antrodia cinnamomea cultivation. The study showed that using bananas as carbon compound for solid cultivation in replacement of MEA media was feasible. Moreover, to apply competitive growth effectively shortened the culture time of mycelia and solved the problem of sluggish yield of Antrodia cinnamomea.
