Exotic species have been accepted as a cause of extinctions of endemic species, through pathogen pollution, competition, predation, and habitat alteration. However, the empirical data supporting the pathogen pollution from exotic species were limited in Asian countries. In addition, for the practice of management and conservation, the source of pathogen and the effects of pathogen pollution on wildlife population were remained to be clarified for each incidence. Here, we present two studies of pathogens spillover from exotic species into endemic wildlife. The first study was focus on the distribution of feline parvovirus subgroup, including feline panleukopenia virus, canine parvovirus type 2a, 2b and 2c, in the free-living leopard cats (Prionailurus bengalensis chinensis) and its relationship with feral dogs and cats; the second study revealed the infection and disease induced by a newly discovered ruminant Rhadinovirus in a free-living Formosan sambar deer (Rusa unicolor swinhoei). The phylogenetic analysis of the newly discovered ruminant Rhadinovirus indicated a high similarity between the viral sequence isolated from fallow deer (Dama dama) and our case. This result suggests the possibility of cross-species transmission from other exotic Cervidae reservoir to the Formosan sambar deer. Our studies provided the evidences of the pathogen pollutions from pet and livestock and revealed the possible impact of pathogens on endemic wildlife. The threats of pathogen pollutions on wild animals should be integrated in the programs of wildlife conservation.
