Road kill is a factor that threats the wildlife population sustainable, especially for endangered species in rural area. However, evidences revealed that disease induced changes of behavior and cognition may increase vulnerability to vehicle collisions. In this study, we surveyed the infection of feline parvovirus in Taiwan leopard cats (Prionailurus bengalensis chinensis) with severe physical trauma due to vehicle collisions. The spleen and small intestine were collected from 11 leopard cats, distributed in the central Taiwan, for feline parvovirus screening. Degenerative primers targeted on partial VP2 gene of feline parvovirus subgroup were employed for amplifying DNA by Polymerase Chain Reaction. Result demonstrated that 8 out of 11 individuals were positive of feline parvovirus subgroup infection. Partial sequences of VP2 gene indicated that antigen type 2a (CPV-2a) and 2b (CPV-2b) of canine parvovirus were circulated in the leopard cat population in Taiwan. In addition, a transition mutation of nucleotide from C to T on the position of 1291 of VP2 gene originally from CPV-2b was detected. Although pathological change caused by CPV was not determined in our study due to autolysis of carcasses. It has been demonstrated that the disease induced by CPV in various felids. Our study showed a high percentage of CPV infection of leopard cats prior to the vehicle collisions. The possible effect of infectious pathogens on increasing vulnerability to road kill should be evaluated to uncover the underlying factors that impact on the population abundance of leopard cat in Taiwan.
