The objectives of disease surveillance are to detect the distribution of disease occurrence, identify the factors affect the distribution, and to assess its impact on a specific population. Due to the hiding natural of wild animals in their habitat and carcasses removed rapidly by scavengers, the majority of disease occurrences in wild animals is invisible and unrecognized. Furthermore, although we can sometimes notice the disease induced mass die-offs on the population of wild animals, evaluation of the disease impact in a specific geographic region or time period is usually a challenge. This situation is commonly seen especially in the passive surveillance program. Radiotelemetry and marking techniques have been adapted extensively in the wildlife ecology researches for home range, habitat use, and population abundance estimation. In addition, the use of radiotelemetry, particularly the one fitted with mortality sensors, could facilitates the recovery of carcasses for further disease examination. Under this condition, the size of population at risk and the effect of disease on the population can be evaluated accurately using the data of known marked animals and individuals of marked animals dead due to a specific disease. For evaluating the scale of mortality in a defined geographic region, the mark-recapture techniques can be adopted through two or more independent carcasses search and marking occasions. Through the procedure, the total carcasses in a geographic region and the cause of death could be evaluated. Wildlife disease surveillance is the essential information for managing the wildlife mediate zoonotic diseases and conservation strategies. However, without the input from the discipline of wildlife ecology, the puzzle of wildlife disease would be impossible to complete.
